An Iconic Hotel in Janpath will now turn into an Urban Development Ministry. With this recent announcement on Wednesday, this four acre plot close to Connaught Place will soon be converted into Government Housing or a Convention Centre or Office Complex. This Hotel building will undergo renovation which is currently unserviceable with its distressed conditions and lack of seismic requirements.

The property here referring to is ITDC property with 150 Rooms which was landmark from the era when Government had the control over running Hotels to the making of Soft Drinks and Breads. But Somehow, Janpath is not able to draw attention. Hence Government decide to take up with ‘Disinvestment’. The neighbouring properties were already sold when Vajpayee Government was in power. But as the NDA defeated in 2004, this property was put on block.

The property shall be considered for the as Government Office or for any such similar purpose to cut down the cost in hiring government office. However there was a suggestion to use the premises as a General Pool Housing scheme for Government Employees and Officer.

As the Hotel is located at the Prime Location in the vicinity of Two Five-Star Hotels – Shangri-La and Le Maridien and a stone throw away distance from central shopping district. Thus a Section of Government is not convinced with the proposal and they believe that the premises should be used in the construction of a Convention Centre which Central Delhi lacks.

ITDC’s Ashok Hotel in Chanakyapuri and Vigyan Bhavan remains the venue for all official events in their large Halls. So, government is exploring avenues to facilitate the hosting of International Events at Pragati Maidan as well as in Dwarka. The work is underway in Pragati Maidan but the exhibition and convention centre at Dwara is on the drawing board. The government is inclined to sell Janpath Hotel like several other ITDC properties which are on disinvestment list.

The aspect which cannot be subsided is that the Hotel can be an lucrative proposition for the bidders searching for a budgeted Hotel in Central Delhi. Hence the strategic sale of premises to any private player may lead to wrongdoing later. So, the Government is looking out for a ‘Safer’ strategy by providing the lease to ITDC. A committee shall constitute and chaired by Cabinet Secretary to decide land usage, implementation of project etc.
